TEAM POLICIES
Varsity Participation:
Academic Requirement:
Use of team uniform and equipment:
Absence from practice/meets:
Travel release policy:
Guidelines for a Nordic varsity letter:
Part I, satisfy the following:
Removal from event, practice, letter consideration, team for any of the following:
- During practice, all athletes are encouraged to work towards participation in practice at varsity athletes. Younger athletes are expected to work their way into varsity workouts (i.e. one varsity practice a week, then two a week and so on).
- To be considered for varsity race positions, athletes must regularly communicate with Coach Teichroew, attend morning weight-rooms, attend regular practices, be on time and prepared.
- Skiing varsity today does not guarantee skiing varsity tomorrow. A major factor is managing athlete health and individual output day to day and race to race for every athlete.
Academic Requirement:
- An athlete with less than a "C" will not be allowed to travel with the team until it is a "C" or better.
- After one week of not traveling, practice will become mandatory study-hall for athlete until "C" or better (i.e. catch up, make-up work, or get ahead with work).
- The athlete will pick a captain to work with daily.
Use of team uniform and equipment:
- Team uniforms are worn only for team/individual photos and high school races.
- Team equipment will be used only for its intended purpose. Equipment will be taken away in the event of unsafe or damaging behavior. Team equipment will be kept rubber-banded and in a ski bag when not in use; and especially when stored.
Absence from practice/meets:
- During the first two weeks of the season, an athlete will be permitted to finish fall sport/activity obligations. This needs to be communicated to the head coach and a plan put in place for safe transition into ski season.
- Absence from school: district policy requires attendance during school day in order to attend practice/meet.
- Being sick and racing: in the interest of athlete health, absence from school due to illness on day preceding a race requires head coach's specific approval to travel and/or participate. Further, any absenteeism on days proceeding races will also require evaluation of athlete's safe future participation.
- During the season, Nordic recognizes the importance of other activities such as academics, band, church, family responsibilities, etc. The athlete is required to inform head coach of upcoming conflicts and provide a plan to stay on task with daily workouts
Travel release policy:
- a.k.a. going home with mom or dad after an away meet
- ISD 861 policy: Travel forms must be on file in the Athletic/Activities Office by 8:30AM on the day of the event

Captains and the leadership group:
While a few individuals don the title "Captain," there is a larger group of talented people that regularly display leadership qualities. It takes more than a head coach, assistant coaches and a couple captains to run this team. We benefit from our work; be a part of the leadership on this team regardless of title.

Here are some talking points describing an effective captain:
- The first to give an atta-boy or girl...the first to get over a disagreement
- Encourage when not encouraged...routinely positive, both verbally and in action
- Understand and contribute to the bigger picture
- Sacrifice yourself at times for the sake of another's improvement and success
- Committed to balancing self, academics, family and skiing
